Travelling with pets, and bringing a pet into Guyana
Safe trips around Guyana, and the paperwork to start early if your pet is flying abroad or coming to Guyana.
General guidance, awaiting review by a Guyanese vet. Always ask a vet about your own animal.
Trips around Guyana
- Use a secure carrier or a harness. Never carry a dog loose in the open tray of a pickup.
- Never leave a pet in a parked car. See heat safety.
- Bring water, a bowl and shade, and stop often on long drives.
- Ask bus, boat and plane operators before you travel whether they take animals, and how.
- Make sure your pet wears a collar with your phone number, and take a recent photo in case they get lost.
Flying abroad, or bringing a pet into Guyana
Every country sets its own rules for animals coming in, and they change. Rules often include some of these:
- a microchip;
- a rabies vaccine given some time before travel, and sometimes a rabies blood test;
- a health certificate from a vet, issued shortly before the trip;
- an import permit from the country the pet is going to.
Some steps take weeks or months, so start early.
Check the current rules
- Coming to Guyana: before you book, contact the Ministry of Agriculture and the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) to confirm the current import permit, health certificate and vaccine requirements.
- Leaving Guyana: check the rules of the country you are going to, through its government or embassy, and ask the GLDA what paperwork your pet needs to leave.
- Airlines have their own rules on crates, breeds and hot weather. Flat-faced dogs and cats may not be allowed to fly in the hold. Book your pet’s place early.
This page is general information. Don’t rely on what someone else did a few years ago: always confirm the current rules with the authorities before you travel.
